What is the Difference Between Butylene Glycol and Propylene Glycol

 The difference between butylene glycol and propylene glycol is as follows:

Different uses: Butanediol is mainly used to make solvents, plastics, coatings, pigments, resins, fibers, etc. It can also be used to make softeners, refrigerant fluids, heat exchange fluids, etc. Propylene glycol is mainly used in the manufacture of coatings, resins, paints, fibers, etc. It can also be used in the manufacture of medicines, spices and food additives.
Different water solubility: Butanediol has poor water solubility, its solubility in water is only 3.6%. Propylene glycol has better water solubility, and its solubility in water can reach 100%.
Different melting points: The melting point of butanediol is relatively low, only -74°C. The melting point of propylene glycol is relatively high, -16.6°C.
Differences in Toxicity: Butylene glycol is more toxic than propylene glycol. The LD50 value of butylene glycol is 1.5g/kg, while the LD50 value of propylene glycol is 5.6g/kg.

1.4-Butanediol ( BDO ) is used industrially as a solvent and in the manufacture of certain types of plastics, elastic fibers and polyurethanes. In organic chemistry, 1.4-butanediol is used in the synthesis of gamma-butyrolactone (GBL). In the presence of phosphoric acid and high temperatures, 1.4-Butanediol dehydrates into the important solvent tetrahydrofuran. At about 200°C, in the presence of a soluble ruthenium catalyst, the diol undergoes a dehydrogenation reaction to form butyrolactone. BDO is used to synthesize 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether, which is then used as an epoxy resin diluent.
